Augustine of Hippo

354 AD – 430 AD

Bishop of Hippo and a theologian whose writings shaped Western Christianity; converted after years of philosophical searching and wrote 'Confessions' and 'City of God.' The scripture connection is direct to a text central to his theology: Romans 9:15-16 on grace and election ('it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy').
