342 AD – 420 AD


The scholar who produced the Latin Vulgate translation of the Bible; he studied Hebrew with Jewish scholars and championed the Hebrew canon (Hebraica veritas) over the Septuagint for the Old Testament. The scripture connection is interpretive: Nehemiah 8:8 describes reading Scripture 'clearly' and giving 'the sense,' a model for translation work, though the text does not name him.
