The brother of Simon Peter, a fisherman of Bethsaida and formerly a disciple of John the Baptist, who first followed Jesus and then brought his brother to him, saying, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (John 1:40-42). He was called with Peter to leave his nets and follow (Matthew 4:18-20) and was among those who asked Jesus about the end (Mark 13:3-4). His birth and death are not recorded; the bar reflects an estimate.
