A worthy man of Bethlehem, a relative of Naomi’s husband Elimelech (Ruth 2:1), who showed favor to Ruth as she gleaned in his field (Ruth 2:8-12). As kinsman-redeemer he acquired the property of Elimelech and took Ruth as his wife before the elders at the gate (Ruth 4:9-13). He is the father of Obed and thus great-grandfather of David, and is named in the genealogy of Jesus (Ruth 4:17-22; Matthew 1:5; Luke 3:32). His birth and death are not stated; the book is set in the days of the judges (Ruth 1:1).
