Tamar

b. 1906 BC

The wife of Judah’s firstborn Er, and after Er’s death the wife of his brother Onan, both of whom the LORD put to death (Genesis 38:6-10). When Judah withheld his third son, Tamar disguised herself, and Judah unknowingly fathered by her the twins Perez and Zerah; he declared, ‘She is more righteous than I’ (Genesis 38:11-26). She is named in Matthew’s genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:3). Her birth year and death are not stated in the text; the bar reflects an estimate from the narrative.
